Question on use

This tool looks like it will fill a need for me. I want to create a flag file that I can search for by version number so that a piece of software doesn't get installed twice on the same PC. I tried saving an empty Notepad document as flag.dll and used this command line:

verpatch "d:\flag.dll" "1.0.0.5"

That gave the error message

error reading version info from the file, err=1812
The file could not be found or is not executable/dll
Some of actions failed, exiting

So I changed the command to

verpatch "d:\flag.dll" "1.0.0.5" /va

And the error message changed to

err open file for reading extra data 1006
Failed to read extra data

Is there something obvious that I'm missing here? Is verpatch smart enough to know that the empty file isn't a real .dll? If so, then I fear that this tool simply won't work, but I'm not sure what other options I have.

It will not create an empty dll. Not smart enough :-(
